✏️ One Year In – A Note to Emerging Middle Leaders

As we close the school year, I want to speak directly to those of you who’ve just completed your first year in middle leadership.

Whether you’re a new Head of Department, Year Lead, or Pastoral Coordinator — this first year has been more than just a new job title. It’s been a time of steep learning, quiet victories, and inner shifts that most people won’t see — but you will feel.

Here’s what I’ve learned — and what I’d offer to any colleague reflecting on their own first year in leadership. 👇

🧠 1. Start With Listening

You don’t need to fix everything right away. Listen. Observe. Ask questions. Understanding the why behind what people do builds trust and leads to change that lasts.

✍️ 2. Clarity Beats Complexity

People will look to you to interpret strategy, deadlines, data. You don’t need to know everything — but you do need to make the next step clear. Keep things simple and focused.

🧭 3. Don’t Underestimate Culture

Culture drives behaviour far more than any policy or plan. Lead with respect for what already exists. If you want to make change — plant it in the soil that’s already there.

🔋 4. Protect Your Energy

In your first year, it’s easy to say “yes” to everything. But boundaries matter. Protect your time, your evenings, and your wellbeing. You’ll be a better leader because of it.

🧱 5. You’re Leading Every Day

Not just in meetings. Not just in line management. But in conversations, tone, support, and visibility. That’s where your real influence lives.

✨ Before You Log Off for Summer…

Take 10 minutes to reflect:

🟢 What are you most proud of? 🟡 What surprised you? 🔵 When did you feel most like a leader — and least? 🟠 What will you take into next year? ⚪ What needs to stay behind?

Reflection builds awareness. Awareness builds leadership. Year 2 will thank you for it.

💬 Final Thought

If year one felt messy, unpredictable, and full of learning — that’s not failure.

That’s leadership becoming.

✅ Keep showing up. ✅ Keep learning. ✅ Keep leading with care.

You’re not just a middle leader anymore — You’re someone who knows who they’re becoming.

Let me know if this resonates — or share with a colleague who might need this today. 🙌
