When I first stepped into leadership, I thought people would trust me because I had ideas, energy, and good intentions.
They didn’t.
Not at first.
Because trust doesn’t come from a job title. It’s not something you’re given — it’s something you build.
And often, you build it before anyone even knows you’re leading.
🤝 The Heart of Leadership Is Trust
If you’ve read the earlier articles in this series, you’ll know I’ve been encouraging educators to:
Lead before the title
Act with intention
Notice the influence they already have
But here’s the truth I wish someone had told me earlier:
If people don’t trust you, they won’t follow you. No matter how strong your ideas are, or how clear your vision is.
That’s not about being popular. It’s about being believable — consistently, calmly, and in the moments that matter.
🛠️ 4 Ways Emerging Leaders Build Trust
These apply whether you're leading a team, a classroom, or simply stepping forward more intentionally in your current role.
âś… 1. Follow through on what you say
📌 It sounds simple — but this is where credibility is made or lost.
Don’t over-promise. Do what you said you’d do. And if something slips, own it before you're asked.
🔍 Ask yourself:
Am I dependable in the small things?
👀 2. Be visible — not just available
🚪 It’s easy to say “my door is always open.”
It’s harder (and more effective) to walk the halls, check in with people, and be seen showing up with care.
🔍 Ask yourself:
Do people see me present — or just when there’s a problem?
🤔 3. Admit when you don’t know — and stay teachable
🧠 One of the fastest ways to build trust is to not pretend.
People can spot fake confidence a mile away. But they respect a leader who’s open, curious, and willing to learn.
🔍 Ask yourself:
What am I modelling when I get something wrong?
🌟 4. Give credit, take responsibility
🙌 Trust grows when people feel safe.
Spot great work. Share the spotlight. And when things go sideways, take the heat first — then figure it out.
🔍 Ask yourself:
Am I building a culture of safety, or of performance pressure?
🧠Trust Is Built in the Small, Repeated Things
It’s not one grand gesture that wins people over. It’s the pattern of how you show up.
Every time you follow through. Every time you really listen. Every time you choose humility over ego.
That’s when trust begins to grow.
đź““ Your Leadership Homework This Week
Start a new page in your Leadership Journal (or begin one now if you haven’t yet!).
đź–‹ Reflect on this:
If someone followed me for a month, what would they say I’m building — fear or trust?
Then write down 3 trust-building actions for this week:
✅ One thing you’ll follow through on
👣 One way you’ll make your presence felt
🤲 One moment you’ll model openness or give credit
You don’t need to get it perfect. You just need to mean it — and keep showing up.
📩 If this resonated with you, I’d love to hear what you’re working on in your leadership journey. And if you’d like the full Leadership Journal template — just drop me a message.
We don’t build trust with a title. We build it by who we become.
Let’s lead that way.
